“Great DNA Tools From AncestryDNA & MyHeritage DNA”
Presentation by Mike Witesman
AncestryDNA and MyHeritageDNA have introduced several very useful tools for those who have DNA tested. AncestryDNA recently introduced SideView™ that sorts your matches to Paternal or Maternal side of your family. This complements their ThruLines®tool that suggests possible unknown ancestors using your family tree and trees of others.
MyHeritageDNA introduced Theory of Family Relativity™ in 2019 and has improved its’ functions since. Theory of Family Relativity™ compares your posted family tree to genealogical information in MyHeritage’s records and family trees to find common ancestors. MyHeritage also provides a Chromosome Browser, AutoClusters and Ethnicities Map tools.
Do not miss your chance to see and understand these tools and more that may be released at RootsTech. The tools will be presented and demonstrated by Mike Witesman at the March 21st SGS meeting!

Did they wear black and white clothes with buckles? Did they abuse Native Americans?
Did they send invitations for the First Thanksgiving? Did they steal land?
This webinar address legend and real history fact to put together

California Gold Rush Research & Migration
Presented by Melinda Kashuba
(In Person & Zoom)
“Where did they go?” and “Where did they come from?” Are the two burning questions that bedevil those of us who long to find what happened to our Gold Rush miner ancestors. The California Gold Rush began in 1848 and ended about 1855. This event brought some 300,000 migrants from the United States and other countries. Approximately one-third of that number came from countries as diverse as Mexico, China, France, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Italy, the West Indies, and even as far away as Australia. San Francisco and Sacramento were the two towns most affected by the multitudes. Foothill towns bloomed and busted within a few short years as miners and business people followed the “next strike.”
The 1850 federal census was deficient in capturing the names of most of the population and the 1852 state census was not much better because many of these foot-loose people worked and lived in remote mining camp locations. This lecture will illustrate through period maps the destination regions that attracted gold seekers to California and the major migration routes. Beyond the census there are other types of records that were generated during this time period. Strategies to locate and search sources will be presented to help jump-start your search for these elusive Argonauts.

Who’s in Your Neighborhood? Meeting the Research Needs of Your Diverse Community
Genealogists utilize the F.A.N. principle, broadening their research to include entire communities. But what about genealogical society F.A.N clubs? Is your organization inclusive? Does your membership reflect the diversity of your community? This lecture examines ways to identify and embrace those ethnic groups which are underserved by many genealogical societies. Suitable for all levels.
